COVID-19 free: Lone active case leaves Vancouver Island hospital

Jun 4, 2020 | 4:33 PM

NANAIMO — Vancouver Island residents have completely flattened the curve.

The BC CDC confirmed on Thursday, June 4 there are no active cases on the Island. The one person who remained in hospital for a significant amount of time was released.

There have been 130 total COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island since the first was confirmed by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on March 11.

The number of active or resolved cases remained at 127 for nearly one month.

However, on June 4 the number rose to 130 due to what are known as epidemiologically-linked cases. These cases are where a patient had contact with someone confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 and transmission was plausible.

Dr. Henry said the three epidemiologically-linked cases on Vancouver Island have recovered and they aren’t considered new cases.

The number of new cases on Vancouver Island began declining at the beginning of April after a steady rise throughout March.

The highest amount of new cases confirmed in one day was seven, which happened three times.

Vancouver Island went through a lengthy stretch of no new cases, spanning over three weeks. The last new case was confirmed on May 7 after five days of no increases.

A total of 25 people have been hospitalized on the Island for the respiratory virus.

Five people have passed away.

Modelling data provided by Dr. Henry showed northern Vancouver Island had the most confirmed COVID-19 cases with 59. Southern Vancouver Island lagged only slightly behind with 43. Central Vancouver Island, including Nanaimo, Parksville and Port Alberni, was afflicted with only 25 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Vancouver Island is one of three health regions within B.C. to have no active cases. Interior Health and Northern Health are also reporting no active cases.

Data provided in daily press conferences is for confirmed COVID-19 cases. It’s unknown how many unconfirmed but likely cases there were.

The curve is expected to continue to be flattened in other health authorities throughout B.C. Health care professionals have warned a resurgence of cases is expected in the fall.
