Over 40 vehicles damaged during late-night Nanaimo vandalism spree

NANAIMO — Mounties are searching for a number of suspects after a vandalism spree earlier this week caused damage to at dozens of vehicles.

Nanaimo RCMP said between 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10 and 4:30 a.m. the next morning, 42 incidents of vandalism were reported, including smashed windows, broken side mirrors, and flat tires.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said all of the targeted vehicles were either parked on the street or in parkades and parking lots.

“We’ve looked at the windows and it appears that maybe a small projectile was fired to break the driver’s side window. It was only the driver’s side window that was targeted. In fact, on Harwell Rd. alone, nine vehicles were hit.”

Targeted vehicles appear to be mostly in the south end of Nanaimo, the downtown, and East Wellington, although a few incidents were also reported in north Nanaimo near Woodgrove Centre.

Three vehicles parked at Vancouver Island University had their windows smashed out.

Affected streets include the 6900 block of the Island Hwy. N, 6600 block of Mary Ellen Dr., Garner Crescent, 400 block of Pine St., and 3800 and 2500 block of Jingle Pot Rd. and 650 Terminal Ave.

O’Brien said they currently have several suspect vehicles, but they’re not releasing any further information on them at this time.

He said the randomness of vehicles targeted and the distance covered makes them believe the vandalism was not targeted, but rather crimes of opportunity.

“It doesn’t appear that any vehicles that were parked in driveways were hit, that would require the person getting out of their vehicle and going towards that vehicle. We haven’t seen that happening yet.”

He said they’re also reaching out to the Ladysmith RCMP detachment, who have reported dozens of vehicles being vandalized recently.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
