NANAIMO – Oh, the good ol’ hockey game. For many Canadians, hockey is more than a sport…it’s a national passion, a source of pride, and a great excuse to get together with friends and eat chicken wings. From early morning practices, to shinny on a frozen pond, to the big screen at your favourite sports bar, hockey brings Canadians together.

1. Who’s got the call?

Have you ever imitated your favourite broadcaster and pretended to call game 7 of the cup final in the shower? No? Oh, ok…neither have we. But if you’ve ever wanted to, you can now pick up a headset and record your own commentary over part of a real game! Plus, learn about the best in the hockey broadcast biz, from Foster Hewitter to Don Cherry.

2. Relive the glory of 3 iconic hockey games.

If you’re old enough, you may remember these iconic games from when they happened in 1942, 1945, and 1966. But even if you’re not, listening to excerpts of the famous Foster Hewitt call games between Toronto and Detroit, and Toronto and New York is inspiring. Relive a part of hockey history as you listen to 1 minute sections of these games at the audio kiosk. Available in English and French.

3. Hockey Trivia.

Which famous hockey player had a can of Soup made for them? Which famous Canadian singer wore a hockey outfit while hosting the Juno Awards? Why did fans riot in Montreal in 1955 after a suspension by NHL President Clarence Campbell? Find the answers to these and other hockey trivia questions at this exhibit.

3. Local Hockey History
Check out the display of artifacts and archive of photos all showcasing our local hockey history. Everything from the games on frozen lakes in the 1890s, the Clippers playing at Civic Arena in Nanaimo to Nanaimo players who ended up playing in the NHL. One artifact highlight is the loan of a Nanaimo Islanders jerseys from a private collection in the community. The Nanaimo Islanders were a Western Hockey League team that played one season at Frank Crane Arena, from 1982-1983 and several Nanaimo Islanders later played in the NHL.

4. Smile for a selfie (even if you’re missing your two front teeth)

Come and take a selfie in front of the selfie station!  There may even be some hockey gear for you to dress up and capture the moment in true hockey style! Gotta protect those pearly whites, right? Lookin’ good, bud!

5. Explore hockey’s most unforgettable moments.

Maurice Richard, Wayne Gretzky, and Sidney Crosby are some of the best players to ever play the game. Many of hockey’s most memorable moments were born from the actions of the game’s elite players. The stories of victory and defeat, the emotion, the pride. Hockey’s ambassador’s and their achievements are ingrained in the collective minds of Canadians. Relive these moments as you explore this exhibit.

They shoot, you score!

The Nanaimo Museum’s new Hockey Feature exhibit is a great outing for even the most casual hockey fan; and the diehard fans will absolutely love it. Hockey is no doubt a part of Canadian culture, regardless of geography, language, age or gender. We all love the game, and we encourage you to re-discover some of its best moments.
