NANAIMO — The total number of COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island continues to hold firm.

No new cases were announced for the Island Health region on Monday, May 25. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 12 new cases across B.C. in the last 48 hours.

It’s the lowest two-day total of new COVID-19 cases in B.C. since early March, prior to the height of the pandemic, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

The Island Health region has not had a local case since May 8, with the only additions to the region’s case total coming from data corrections or errors.

The province reported 267 active cases in British Columbia, including one on Vancouver Island. The region’s lone active case is currently hospitalized, one of 37 such patients across the province.

Dr. Henry said B.C. residents adhering to health orders and recommendations made for a solid first step in B.C.’s restart plan.

“What is clear is our success so far and our ability to ease restrictions relies on our shared effort and commitment and we need that to continue,” Dr. Henry said.

“That means working together, recognizing we all have our own challenges and experiences and continue to be tolerant and generous and respectful with each other.”

The province announced no new outbreaks in long term care homes, but stated there were 16 on-going outbreaks across B.C impacting 333 residents and 209 staff.

Health minister Adrian Dix said visitation restrictions in long term care homes will continue for the foreseeable future.

“For the moment, it is not possible to change those policies around visiting, although they’re constantly being reviewed because we know of the consequences for families of not being allowed to visit but we also understand the safety that’s required in our long term care homes,” Dix said.
