‘Irate’ woman arrested after weapons produced at Nanaimo Hullo terminal

NANAIMO — A woman is facing a trio of charges after allegedly producing weapons and threatening employees at a local ferry terminal.

RCMP were called to the Hullo Terminal at 100 Port Way on Sunday, Oct. 4, at around 1 p.m. after a woman was refused boarding for a sailing after producing a ticket from the day before.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW witnesses reported the woman became agitated and ‘irate.’

“She had produced a knife…threats were directed at some employees. When we arrived, she was gone. We found her a short distance away. She was taken into custody without incident, and the knife and brass knuckles were located.”

The suspect was apprehended without incident near the Helijet helipad, just south of the Hullo terminal.

O’Brien said “it was quite a volatile situation” and credited witnesses for providing valuable information to the 911 call-taker, as well as to officers on scene after the fact.

The BC Prosecution Service approved three charges against 55-year-old Dena Marie McCaughey: assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

She was kept in custody overnight Sunday, with O’Brien noting the accused has a Monday court appearance scheduled.

McCaughey is also due to answer to another three charges from a July 2025 incident in Colwood, where she’s accused of criminal harassment, harassing communications, and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
