Dominant VIU Mariner women sweep major PACWEST soccer awards

NANAIMO — A dominant season on the pitch has yielded a sweep of annual honours for VIU Mariners players and staff.

The women’s soccer team went 10-1-1 through the PACWEST regular season, comfortably securing top spot in B.C. and placing fourth in the national CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) rankings.

Results helped hometown product Jada Kamerman win Player of the Year honours with seven goals, sharing the PACWEST lead, as well as leading the Mariners in assists and shots.

Kamerman played Division 1 soccer int he NCAA last season with Tarleton State University in Texas.

Midfielder Mary Huggill, from Canmore, AB, took Rookie of the Year honours for her impressive three-goal season while being a key playmaker through the Mariner midfield.

Head coach Bobbie Taylor was named PACWEST women’s soccer coach of the year for the fourth season in a row.

Along side her coaching staff, Taylor led the Mariners to concede only five goals through their entire regular season while slotting 34 past opposition keepers.

So dominant was the VIU offence, the 34 goals scored by Mariners players this year eclipsed the 30 scored by the other three teams combined.

Kamerman and Huggill were also named PACWEST all-stars, along with goalkeeper Kaiden Thorpe, defender Mary Nicholls and midfielder Emma Thornton.

VIU will play in the PACWEST championship game on Sunday, Oct. 26 against the winner of Douglas and Langara.

VIU’s men’s team had one player named to the all-star roster after a tough 2-3-7 season, with Charlie Smith rewarded for his five goals this season.
