5 Things To Do At The Nanaimo Museum This Summer

Jun 14, 2019 | 3:30 AM

NANAIMO – It’s summer. The kids are running wild. You’ve been to every beach, every park, both pools, even grandma’s place…at least twice. It seems like you’ve been to every ‘kid friendly’ place in the entire City of Nanaimo and you’re running out of activities to keep them entertained.

But wait…what about the Nanaimo Museum? If you’re looking for an inexpensive outing that’s both educational and entertaining, look no futher. Because here are 5 things to do at the Nanaimo Museum this summer.

1. Ye Olde Bastion

Did you know that Nanaimo was the third oldest city in all of British Columbia?

It’s true – and the Bastion is one of our most recognizable landmarks!

Originally built in 1853 by the Hudson’s Bay Company, the Bastion is a must see for summer adventures. It’s open 7 days a week from the May Long Weekend until Labour Day. Don’t forget to get a picture by the cannons!

2. Just The Facts, Ma’am.

Put on your detective hats, grab your magnifying glass, and get ready to investigate a murder from Nanaimo’s tangled past.

Because of its graphic content, this event is best suited for older teens (aged 15-17 with at least 1 adult present) and adults.

“Case Files” is a Nanaimo Mysteries themed program for groups of 2 to 8 people.

Follow clues and complete puzzles to unlock boxes as you try to solve how a scandalous real life murder case ended back in 1909.

This is a unique experience you won’t want to miss!

3. Unsolved Mysteries A-Plenty

Have you ever seen a ghost? Heard rumours of hidden treasure?

Nanaimo has its fair share of mysterious, and until September 2nd you can learn all about them!

From a safe-cracking ex-cop to the last public hanging, and a house that was long forgotten after sinking into a mine.

The Nanaimo Mysteries exhibit explores some of our most infamous stories.

4. These Boots Are Made For Walking

Believe it or not, some people actually want to walk through a cemetery!

If you’re feeling brave, check out the Pioneer Cemetery Walking Tour, happening July 6thand the 24th, and again on August 10th and 21st from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Nanaimo’s oldest cemetery, and the third oldest in B.C., dates back to the 1850’s and is now a public park! Discover the stories buried there and get an idea of what life was like in Nanaimo over 160 years ago.

 5. The People Have Spoken (about what art they like)

Love art? Throughout July and August, you’ll have a chance to have your say and vote for your favourite art pieces on display at the Community Gallery Exhibit. This exhibit is free and is located in the Lobby Hallway of the Museum. Come out and see a selection from the area’s most talented and celebrated artists across a variety of mediums!
