Community celebration to take place for Parksville paralympic hero

PARKSVILLE — Following an exceptional showing at this past summer’s Paralympic Games, Parksville’s Nicholas Bennett will be formally recognized where he honed his craft.

The Regional District of Nanaimo, Town of Qualicum Beach and City of Parksville are honouring Bennett at an event open to the public on Friday, Nov. 1 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Ravensong Aquatic Centre.

Now a resident of Red Deer AB, the 20-year-old Bennett grew up in Parksville, excelling in the pool in neighbouring Qualicum Beach.

His ascent in the world of swimming culminated with three medals at the 2024 games in Paris, France in the pool, including a pair of gold medals.

Bennett was chosen as the co-flag bearer for Canada at the closing ceremonies.

He obtained gold in a Paralympic record time of two minutes 6.05 seconds in the 200-metre individual medley.

Bennett also claimed gold in the 100-metre breaststroke, while he scoped up a silver medal in the 200-metre freestyle.

He was the first Canadian athlete since 2004 to win multiple pool medals at the Paralympic Games.

The Regional District of Nanaimo noted in a news release that there will be picture-taking opportunities, the chance to meet Bennett, enjoy some refreshments and hear from guest speakers in the pool lobby.
