1 man injured, 2 people arrested following Millstone River shooting

NANAIMO — Mounties provided additional information regarding a Wednesday afternoon shooting along the banks of the Millstone River.

A news release from Nanaimo RCMP stated a man is in hospital and two men are in police custody following the incident near the Millstone River on Wednesday, June 14 at about 3:30 p.m.

The man was located at the scene with life-threatening injuries, believed to have been caused by a firearm, police noted.

He was transported up the bank of the river and taken Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

RCMP originally stated a woman was the shooting victim during the minutes following the incident which saw numerous emergency responders swarm the scene.

Charges have not yet been laid against the accused.

Police Dog Services located a firearm in the area, police stated.

“Investigators are continuing their investigation and are expected to be on scene for most of the day,” Nanaimo RCMP res. Cst. Gary O’Brien stated in the release.

While police were responding to the shooting, a report of a stabbing in the Victoria Cres./Selby St. area was made.

The victim sustained minor injuries and was not cooperative with investigators, police said.

Wednesday’s shooting took place near the scene of where frustrated Nanaimo business owner Clint Smith was shot in March following his assertion items from his nearby business were stolen and stored in the area.

Area residents in particular have grown increasingly frustrated with social disorder and increased levels of violence associated to the homeless community forming along the lower portion of the Millstone River.

Several hundred people live in the immediate vicinity, including multiple condo and apartment buildings.
