Snowfall warning issued for Nanaimo & Oceanside

NANAIMO — Environment Canada have upgraded their projections for the first significant winter storm of the season.

A special weather statement, issued over the weekend, was upgraded to a snowfall warning on Monday, Nov. 28, warning of between 10 to 15 centimetres of snow for parts of eastern Vancouver Island.

“A low pressure system approaching Vancouver Island will generate heavy snowfall amounts and windy conditions over widespread parts of East Vancouver Island,” the warning read. “The snow will begin near midday on Tuesday (Nov. 29) with southeast winds of 70 gusting to 90 kilometres per hour near the Strait of Georgia beginning on Tuesday afternoon.”

It’s expected the snow will turn to rain late Tuesday evening.

Heaviest accumulations are expected over inland areas, upwards of 20 centimetres are forecast in parts of the Comox Valley and areas of Oceanside to the south.

Environment Canada is also warning of rapidly changing winter driving conditions for some areas, particularly over the Malahat.

“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.”

It’s the first of two systems expected this week, with another snow-rain mix forecast for Friday, Dec. 2.
