NANAIMO — Heading into the final day of advance voting for the 2026 Provincial Election, voters in Ladysmith, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach are leading the province.

Data from Elections BC shows as of Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m., 14,512 ballots were cast in the expansive Ladysmith-Oceanside riding, representing around 28.4 per cent of eligible electors and more than any riding in B.C.

NDP incumbent Stephanie Higginson is being challenged by Conservative Kris McNicol and Green Party candidate Charlene Smylie.

Turnout has also been strong in Nanaimo-Lantzville, with 11,925 votes cast through five days of advance voting, or around 25.8 per cent of eligible voters.

George Anderson with the BC NDP is hoping to retain his seat against Conservative Kelsey Pringle, BC Communist Party’s Pepper Saltman, and Green Sharleen Weatherley.

Two other mid-Island ridings are not seeing the turnout so far.

Mid-Island Pacific Rim has recorded 8,513 advance votes, where Josie Osborne of the BC NDP is trying to keep her seat ahead of Conservative Joshua Dahling and Green Gracie MacDonald.

Nanaimo-Gabriola Island has received 8,209 as of end of day Tuesday, with the NDP’s Sheila Malcolmson challenged by Conservative Mark MacDonald and Green Anna Mary McKenzie.

Those numbers represent just over 17 per cent of eligible voters in each riding and rank the ridings 59th and 61st, respectively, out of 93 provincial electoral districts for percentage of eligible electors to have cast a ballot.

Advance vote turnout across the region is generally down compared to 2024’s levels, where just over a million votes were cast before general election day.

Based on vote counts through the five days so far, only Ladysmith-Oceanside is on pace to eclipse the last election, short 1,388 votes on Tuesday when polls closed.

Between 3,000 and 5,500 votes were needed to match 2024’s tallies for the other three ridings.

Polls are open until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21 for advance voting, while general election day is Saturday, Oct. 24.
