‘Please be aware:’ RCMP preach safety for trick-or-treaters and motorists

NANAIMO — With thousands of children filling the streets around the mid Island Monday evening, Nanaimo RCMP are imploring people to be prepared.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said motorists, trick-or-treaters and their parents need be paying close attention to their actions Monday night.

“Cars on side streets should be creeping along, they shouldn’t be going any faster than 30 kilometers an hour. There could be potential for kids running out at any time, so please be aware.”

O’Brien said excited kids are prone to unexpectedly darting across the street.

He said it’s critical children are visible, can see clearly and aren’t wearing costumes that could cause them to trip.

“Light the way, have fully charged batteries in a flashlight for that extra measure of safety,” O’Brien suggested.

While kids may be excited to start diving into their junk food haul immediately, O’Brien said inspecting it first is strongly advised.

“There are very rare occasions where bags are opened or some candies are tainted, please check them over before you allow your little ones to dig in.”

Extra RCMP members are assigned at detachments throughout the mid Island region on Halloween night.
