QUALICUM BEACH — A man was declared deceased on scene after he was hit by a vehicle on Hwy. 19A south of Baylis Rd.

Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth said the incident on the evening of Saturday, Oct 15 involved a southbound vehicle hitting the pedestrian on the travel portion of the highway.

“It was dark out, there was no crosswalk in the area, we don’t know why the pedestrian was on the highway, it’s an unfortunate incident all the way around.”

Worth said the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

He said there were numerous witnesses who stopped and assisted the pedestrian and police during their investigation.

“We spoke to all of the witnesses who confirmed the same version of events as the driver to us that this person just appeared in the roadway and unfortunately was struck by the vehicle.”

No charges are being considered and the case was handed over to the BC Coroners Service, Worth stated.

He said the deceased is a 46-year-old local man from the Oceanside area.

The incident occurred on an unlit, straight portion of the highway between Baylis and Larkdowne roads where southbound traffic narrows to one lane, Worth said.

The highway was closed for several hours, while a detour was put in place for traffic in both directions.

Local fire departments, Oceanside RCMP and BC Ambulance Service personnel all attended.
