VIDEO: Small dogs rescued from fire in Nanaimo home

NANAIMO — First responders successfully rescued two small dogs from a burning central Nanaimo home.

Heavy smoke was reported coming from the basement of a home in the 2100 block of Boundary Ave., near the former Woodlands Secondary School site on Tuesday, Aug. 2. around 10:20 a.m.

Assistant fire chief Stu Kenning said flames were coming out the front of the home where the fire began, but crews moved quickly to knock down the fire in the house, which is home to nine people.

“No-one home at the time of the fire. We’ve notified the nine people and they’re slowly showing up to get their belongings,” Kenning said.

Two rental suites are in the building, one on the ground floor and another on the second.

While on scene, one dog ran from the home but was quickly wrangled by a responding RCMP officer. Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews were able to locate the second pet.

Both animals are being cared for until they can be reunited with owners.

An investigation into the cause oft he fire continues.
