NANAIMO — Almost a year after the discovery of a missing man’s body beside a busy Nanaimo highway, charges have been laid against another man.

On Nov. 12, 2025, the body of 23-year-old Mahadi Redwan was located in the bushes beside Hwy. 19A between Turner Rd. and the Rutherford/Mostar Rd. intersection, after he was reported missing a few weeks prior.

Nanaimo RCMP said following a lengthy investigation, one charge of dangerous driving causing death and an arrest warrant was issued for Wael Hmaied, born in 1989, on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Hmaied turned himself in to police on Monday, Oct. 26, where he was released with several conditions and is scheduled to appear in court in November.

Nanaimo RCMP want to thank the public and partner agencies for their assistance in the investigation.

According to the online court services, Hmaied’s past charges include theft under $5,000, as well as numerous driving offences on the Mainland over the last decade.

Hmaied is also scheduled to appear in a Vancouver provincial court next month for a first appearance on a sexual assault charge out of Vancouver.
