NANAIMO — Local police along with search and rescue members are conducting a massive search for a missing man.

First responders were called out to the parking lot adjacent to the Nanaimo River bridge around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14 after a vehicle was discovered with a cell phone, wallet and keys inside.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW local officers along with a huge network of search and rescue crews began their operation immediately.

“We couldn’t get the choppers out yesterday but two are out (Saturday, Jan. 15) along with about 70 personnel from search and rescue crews from up and down the Island, a search and rescue dog. Sadly we haven’t found anything.”

Members from multiple Island-based search and rescue organizations are aiding in the search, including Nanaimo, Arrowsmith and Campbell River. Crews from Cedar Volunteer Fire Department are also working the search.

O’Brien noted the conditions are challenging for search crews with the speed of the Nanaimo River creating a moving target for their operations.

Police describe the missing man as caucasian, 5’10” tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a forest green sweater, tan pants and dark shoes.

The family have requested a picture and name not be released.

O’Brien said the search will likely be called off after 5 p.m. on Saturday due to the loss of available light.

“Our coordinator will be speaking with the family at the end of the day, looking at where we go in terms of continuing the search (Sunday) or shutting it down.”

If anyone has any information about this individual, they’re asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345.
