Commercial fisherman fined $30,000 for 2023 incidents off Nanaimo’s coast
NANAIMO — An experienced commercial fisherman was hit with another fine recently for failing to properly log his fishing activities off Nanaimo’s coast in 2023.
Delta resident Dean Keitsch, 63, was fined $30,000 during a sentencing hearing in Nanaimo on Friday, July 31, after pleading guilty earlier this year to four charges under Canada’s Fisheries Act for failure to comply with the terms and conditions of his fishing licence based on incidents between May 12 and June 8, 2023.
Federal Crown counsel Jenny Rutherford said Keitsch has received multiple warnings from Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) officers throughout his life regarding following the rules and requirements of his fishing licence, citing at least seven examples from 2001-2019.
“The thrust of this, is that the Crown says that Mr. Keitsch is well aware of his obligations and has a history of struggling to comply with them.”
