Quebec watchdog probes fatal police shooting of man in Laurentians

SAINTE-ADÈLE, Que. — Quebec’s police watchdog is probing the death of a man shot by provincial police in Ste-Adèle, north of Montreal. 

According to preliminary information, provincial police were called to a chalet in the Laurentians town at about 9:50 p.m. on Thursday.

Quebec’s Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes says police were unable to reason with the 44-year-old man who was inside the building.

According to police, the man stuck his hand inside a backpack and police attempted to subdue him using a stun gun without success.

Police say the man took a handgun out of the bag and an officer opened fire, striking the man with at least one bullet.

He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Five investigators were dispatched to the scene, and Montreal police are providing technical and forensic support to assist the investigation.
