Military munitions found in Nanaimo home after report of assault with a weapon

NANAIMO — Local RCMP say they found a stash of weapons, including military mortars, after raiding a north Nanaimo home.

The discovery spawned from an assault with a weapon complaint which sent numerous officers to north Nanaimo around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28.

Police tracked a 37-year-old man to his house in the neighbourhood near Coal Tyee Elementary School and used a mega phone to talk with him prior to an incident-free arrest. The home was secured overnight by police.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW a search warrant was obtained early Wednesday morning for the man’s home, where police found several civilian and military weapons.

“(We) found multiple firearms, many not being stored properly, many magazines loaded. Some military munitions were found such as mortars, so the Canadian Armed Forces have been contacted and will be attending to that home to secure and safely dispose of them,” O’Brien said.

The man remains in custody and faces multiple weapons charges, including assault with a weapon.

RCMP added there is no danger to the public, despite the heavy presence in the area Tuesday night.

“We have a number of police officers on scene with various intervention options to ensure their safety and that of the public,” O’Brien said.
