Pre-construction work advances for Lantzville long term care home

LANTZVILLE — Underground servicing and surface-level work is underway to build a much-needed large long-term care home in Lantzville.

Island Health’s long-term care home at 6910 Lantzville Rd. at Schook Rd., featuring a pair of six-storey buildings, has an active site works permit for utilities and some surfacing work, the District of Lantzville confirmed.

A building permit is under review, while an agreement is in place for a sewer line to be installed for the long-term care home down Schook Rd., according to George Robinson, Lantzville’s director of planning and community services.

Island Health tentatively estimates construction completion in the fall of 2029, after originally aiming for a 2027 completion following an October 2023 initial funding announcement.

Originally slated to be a 306 bed complex, the updated design calls for 298 long-term beds, including 18 hospice beds.

Motorists are advised of a partial road closure of the corner of Dickinson and Schook roads between Monday, Sept. 14 and Friday, Sept. 18 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. for sewer line installation.

The long-term care complex at Lantzville’s southern edge across the street from north Nanaimo’s May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park will be owned and operated by Island Health.

Construction features a pair of six-storey towers replacing several smaller buildings originally envisioned, as the project was redesigned by Island Health due to escalating costs.

While the B.C. government is funding a majority of funding for the $350 million project, the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District is contributing $114 million, according to the province.

Seven other similar senior care homes previously announced by the B.C. government have been delayed, as outlined in this year’s provincial budget, due to financial constraints.
