Extended Nanaimo Aquatic Centre closure allows for extensive upgrades

NANAIMO — A workhorse indoor recreation facility is about to be out of commission for substantial investments to go ahead.

The entire Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, with the the exception of the adjoining private CBI Health clinic, is scheduled to be closed between Monday, July 20 and October 4 to allow several notable projects to move ahead.

The Third St. facility is having two large HVAC mechanical units replaced, responsible for heating, cool and humidity control.

A new water play feature will be installed, and renovations will be done to the front guest services area.

Charlotte Davis, the City of Nanaimo’s deputy director of parks and natural areas, said the “major improvements” are required as the building ages, which is why the annual NAC maintenance closure is longer this year.

“We get 1,500 people through the doors every day at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. As you can imagine a facility that is 25 years old takes some maintenance and that’s why we’re taking the opportunity to do that.”

Anticipated by children and families, a new accessible-friendly splash feature is filling extra space left by the deteriorating 30-foot-high boat feature that was removed as part of the 2023 maintenance closure.

Davis said the new water multi-level feature will be designed for wide ranges of children and families to enjoy.

“The new feature will include a variety of splash and play elements, spray hoses, a large tipping-water bucket, a small slide and other interactive water play components for all abilities,” Davis said.

Beban Pool and weight room remain open during the NAC shut down, while the outdoor Kin Pool at Bowen Park offers weekend public swimming through Aug. 28 for $5.

Davis noted Nanaimo’s various urban lakes provide suitable swimming options, including daily life-guard staffed Westwood Lake Park in place between noon and 5:30 p.m. through Sept., including statutory holidays.

Senior government grants are helping to absorb costs associated with upgrading the NAC, Davis noted.

“We also received some provincial and federal grant funding. The overall budget is $13.4 million, that includes $3.9 (million) which is from grants.”
