Young Nanaimo e-scooter rider injured in vehicle collision
NANAIMO — A teenage e-scooter rider was hit by a turning car and thrown to the road, spawning renewed safety concerns.
Police say it happened on Thursday, July 9, just before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Uplands Dr. and Villa Rd., where two youths were riding e-scooters on the sidewalk when a right-turning vehicle on Villa hit one of the riders.
“The rider was thrown onto the roadway and sustained injuries requiring medical attention. Investigators learned that the rider’s helmet was not properly secured and came off during the collision,” noted a Nanaimo RCMP news release.
Police stated their preliminary investigation indicated the scooter riders were travelling at high rates of speed.
