NANAIMO — Local Mounties working to identify a body which was found washed ashore.

Around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, a passerby at Neck Point Park in Nanaimo noticed a body along the beach and contacted police.

“There was significant decomposition and we were unable to make any determination of the individual,” Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said. “Those attempts are being done now.”

The body was taken from the scene for further examination.

O’Brien said there’s little more officers can say at this point until an identification is made.

“It would be presumptuous of us to make any determinations of who the individual was. We are hoping we will be in that position soon but not at this point.”

In December 2023, Ryan Pratt was reported missing from his boat moored off Hammond Bay with friends last seeing him riding on a small skiff.

The skiff was recovered on Shack Island, near Piper’s Lagoon, however Pratt remains missing.
