Free family fishing weekend returns

Jun 19, 2026 | 2:28 PM

NANAIMO — Freshwater fishing licenses are free of charge this weekend, part of an annual tradition in the province.

B.C. Family Fishing Weekend runs between Friday, June 19, and Sunday, June 21, which includes events and fishing-themed activities encouraging more people to take up the pastime of fishing.

Coordinated by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and funded by the B.C. government, this marks the 27th year licence-free fishing has taken place, which helps remove barriers for families.

“Over 30 events will take place around BC, with events designed to offer opportunities to people of all ages to learn about and enjoy freshwater fishing. They feature structured and unstructured components for people to enjoy at their own pace. There is no charge to participate, and license requirements have been waived for the three days,” stated a society news release.

Locally, the Ladysmith Sportsmen’s Club hosts a B.C. Family Fishing Weekend event at Bush Creek Hatchery on Saturday, June 20, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
