NANAIMO — A popular summer event with people of all ages racing down one of the Harbour City’s famously steep hills is back this summer.

The Hub City Soap Box Derby returns to Nanaimo’s Wall St. on Aug. 15, starting at 9 a.m., with registration now open.

Organizer Jason Clayton said they’re excited to be entering their milestone fifth year of competition.

“It’s always such a fun event, and we can’t wait to see the creativity, speed, and community spirit that will be on display on race day.”

There are several requirements the soap box cars need to meet to keep the races even, such as your car can't exceed 200 lbs, and no wheel modifications are allowed.

For the second year in a row, racers will start near the Bowen Rd. and Wall St. intersection and head towards Caledonia Park, utilizing the parking lots at Bowen Park and the Nanaimo Curling Club.

There are 40 slots available in the Stock Class, where youth ages six to 16 will be provided with a car kit to customize, or they can use a kit from past years, if available.

The Open Class has 20 spots available for anyone 10 years old or older, with mostly adults registering in this division. Racers in the Open Class can build their own soapbox racers without a kit, maximizing speed and creativity.

All carts must be gravity-powered, without an engine or other means of propulsion, with participants often adding their own creative touches with custom paint jobs and decorations.

Prizes are awarded for the fastest and most creative vehicle.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre, with around $100,000 raised since the first event.

More information is available on their website.
