NANAIMO — She couldn’t unseat the champ, but a local history professor did the Island proud.

Whitney Wood, a resident of Nanaimo and Vancouver Island University instructor, appeared on the Thursday, June 23 episode of the long-running quiz show Jeopardy!

Wood started strong, correctly ringing in for the first three questions to earn $1,400 and was a constant presence through the opening Jeopardy! round.

At the show’s first commercial break, Wood comfortably led with $5,000 ahead of one-day champion Jeff Goldfarb and fellow challenger Andrew Lewis.

Following the break, host Mayim Bialik chatted with the contestants, prompting Wood to share a story on a childhood connection to the famous Jeopardy! theme song.

“It was naturally, every weeknight, bedtime. So from about age three or four, we always had Jeopardy! on the weekday evenings and 7:30 p.m., wind down time when that credit music played, off to bed,” Wood said.

After the first round, and ahead of double Jeopardy!, Wood led the game with a score of $4,800.

Double Jeopardy! saw contestants battle for the lead, with an initially quiet Wood scoring a $2,000 correct question, identifying a 2017 Charlize Theron movie about a “badass spy” based on a graphic novel called “The Coldest City.”

“What is Atomic Blonde?” Wood answered to retake the lead.

A late true daily double, with just three clues left on the board for Goldfarb allowed him to double his score and take control of the game, eventually finishing with a total of $20,000.

Lewis ended the game with $11,000 and Wood had $7,600.

All three contestants failed to correctly answer the Final Jeopardy! clue, with Wood wagering $5,000 of her final total.

Wood finished second with a total of $2,600, but will take home $2,000 in prize money from the show.
