NANAIMO — It took a little longer than usual, but Nanaimo has its first baby of 2022.

Amaya Tran was born at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital at 4:09 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1, weighing seven pounds.

She joins parents Alice Kong and Jimmy Tran, along with older siblings Ahri (four years old) and Adaline (three years old)

The first baby born in B.C. for 2022 came early on Saturday, Jan. 1 in Victoria with Shawna White and Ishmael Grimwood welcoming a baby boy.

2021’s first Nanaimo-born child came just under two hours into the new year, with Taylor and Chris Doughty welcoming baby-boy Gerald.

Gerald also had the honour of being B.C.’s first baby boy for the year.

In 2020, Kari Oxler and then-fiance Graydon Aguiar celebrated the arrival of Nasch Oxler Aguiar at 3:56 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Nasch was born a week early after 13 hours of labour.
