NANAIMO— Thousands of babies are born every year at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, but Nasch Oxler Aguiar is number one.

Island Health confirmed Kari Oxler and fiance Graydon Aguiar welcomed Nanaimo’s New Years baby on Jan. 1, 2020 at 3:56 a.m.

A healthy Nasch Oxler Aguiar weighed in at seven lbs. And 11 ounces after 13 hours of labour.

A tired Kari Oxler told NanaimoNewsNOW she doesn’t mind the added interest her baby is generating.

“Everyone’s obviously excited for us to have our first baby, but it’s special that he’s the first baby in a new year in Nanaimo, it makes it that much more exciting,” Oxler said.

Nasch was apparently eager to enter the world; he wasn’t due until January 7.

Oxler said having a baby this time of year wasn’t overly stressful since she and Graydon were able to take time off work.

She said the plan is to go home on Thursday, Jan 2.

“We’ll get into the swing of things and try to figure out our new life and child,” Oxler said shortly after a visit from her parents.

Vancouver Island’s New Years baby arrived at Jan. 1 at 12:17 a.m. at Victoria General Hospital.

The province’s first baby to be born in 2020 was delivered one minute into the year at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster.
