NANAIMO — There’s a new face representing the NDP in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding.

Lisa Marie Barron is the new NDP candidate for the next federal election. Nominee voting began on Thursday and her victory was announced on Saturday, May 22.

“I am honoured and thrilled to have been selected as this riding’s NDP candidate,” Barron said in a social media post.

“People are tired of broken promises and Trudeau’s years of empty talk. Nanaimo-Ladysmith residents want real investments in local affordable housing, a real climate action plan and a Canada that works for everyone.”

Barron, as well as being a SD68 trustee, works in the substance abuse and addictions field, conducting community and program development.

Three others were on the ballot for the riding.

The Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding was long considered an NDP stronghold until a 2019 byelection, where the party turned green with a win for Paul Manly. Manly then secured the riding again in the 2019 general election.

Current BC NDP MLA Sheila Malcolmson was the area’s previous NDP MP.

The next federal election hasn’t been called but many federal parties are shoring up their nominees.
