PARKSVILLE — A familiar face is back in the mayor’s chair in Parksville, who vows to keep “close tabs” on a controversial supportive housing project.

Ed Mayne garnered 2,567 votes, about 1,000 clear of incumbent councillor Kirk Oates’ mayoral bid. Mayne, 68, served as Parksville’s mayor between 2008 and 2010, prior to stepping down for a failed provincial Liberal leadership bid. Mayne told NanaimoNewsNOW he doesn’t think reversing approval of the supportive housing project at 222 Corfield St. is realistic, noting zoning and building permits have already been finalized.

“We can say ‘Oh we hate it, we don’t like it,’ but at the end of the day it’s a done deal, the only way it gets changed is if the court overrules it,” Mayne said.

He stressed he’s still opposed to the project, calling it the wrong housing delivery model at the wrong location.

Mayne said Parksville Council will closely watch how the Corfield St. supportive housing project blends in with the community and react accordingly.

“And find out what we need to do to control it so it doesn’t cause the problems people are concerned about, whether that’s an additional police force, I don’t really know at this time,” Mayne said.

Meanwhile, Qualicum Beach has a new mayor in Brian Wiese, who dispatched incumbent councillor Anne Skipsey by nearly 600 votes.
