Peace bond hearing against former Nanaimo CAO delayed once more

NANAIMO — It’s unclear when a hearing about a peace bond against former Nanaimo CAO Tracy Samra will be heard in court.

The matter was to be heard at Provincial Court in Nanaimo on Oct. 5. However, due to a change in legal counsel, the hearing was adjourned to some time in the future during a brief session on Monday, Oct. 1.

Special prosecutor Michael Klein and Samra’s new legal counsel Glen Orris will now set a date for the hearing on Nov. 13.

Orris told the court he was hired by Samra roughly a week-and-a-half ago and hasn’t had time to go through all of the legal documentation.

Klein said he and Samra’s former legal counsel had “worked something out” which wouldn’t take up much court time.

It’s been more than six months since the peace bond was initially applied for. Her court appearances were adjourned four times before the October hearing date was set on June 1.

In March, Klein approved the Crown’s application for a peace bond, citing nine people had reasonable grounds to fear personal harm or injury by Samra. Those included mayor Bill McKay, councillors Sheryl Armstrong and Diane Brennan, as well as several former and current City of Nanaimo staff.

Klein was appointed after Samra was arrested for allegedly threatening several people at City Hall on Jan. 31.

She was then fired for cause by Council on May 25 following an independent investigation.
