NANAIMO — Local Mounties arrested a 15-year-old youth after they allegedly used bear spray against a fellow student at Wellington Secondary School.

The incident unfolded just after noon on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and involved what police are saying was a dispute between the alleged attacker and a similarly-aged victim.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said the spray was directed toward the victim, also affecting the surrounding area of the school.

“One youth unwisely pulled out some bear spray and hit the other student with it. EHS was not required, the school dealt with it and the area was decontaminated. This is a very poor choice, and unfortunately, we’re seeing this more and more now between students and outside activities with youth.”

Wellington’s RCMP School Liaison Officer is involved in the situation and speaking with both families.

Police are looking to determine exactly what led to the incident, with their investigation continuing.

The attacker is facing a charge of assault with a weapon.

O’Brien said possessing and carrying bear spray in itself is not illegal, however, its use in a school is unacceptable.

Those with bear spray must be at least 18 years old, and have purchased it from a licensed retailer.

“A lot of times it’s for self-defence when it comes to animal attacks, hiking in the woods. But, if you use it in a means that’s not what it’s designed for, you can be charged for assault with a weapon.”

Wellington principal Michelle Smith sent an email to parents late Wednesday evening outlining the incident.

“Some students in the vicinity were impacted and received first aid,” Smith wrote. “Parents of those students have been notified directly.”

Smith continued to say they will encourage any students with safety concerns as a result of the incident to speak to a trusted adult at the school.
