One key piece of evidence delivered involved a phone, allegedly belonging to Campbell, found inside an abandoned Escalade at a north-end Nanaimo hotel.

It contained photos of the gun used in the murder, as well as what Crown said were “key admissions” by Campbell in advance of committing the crime, by detailing the money he was being paid and his lavish treatment while he was working for those who hired him.

One message stated, “I just want to shoot and go home.”

Crown’s case wrapped on Thursday, Aug. 27, after hearing from a forensic firearms expert witness who was consulted by RCMP on ballistics evidence linked to the crime.

Her field identifies marks left on bullets and casings during the process of being loaded, chambered, and fired, telling court the different testing methods she used to reach her conclusion.

She spoke about comparing bullet fragments from the scene to her own firing tests done earlier this year using the same model of Glock handgun and .40 calibre Smith & Wesson ammunition.

She indicated in her overall report that while there were some minor discrepancies, she found an “agreement of class” between the exhibits from the scene and the testing she conducted.

Multiple exhibits were officially submitted as evidence during the last week of the trial, including an agreed-upon statement of facts, Campbell’s cell phone records, and a one-minute and thirty-second video from a surveillance camera at the Tsawwassen Ferry terminal showing a white Cadillac Escalade buying tickets and driving on board nearly a week before the shooting.

Sentencing arguments will be conducted early next month, with veteran BC Supreme Court Justice Douglas Thompson delivering his verdict at a later date.
