‘Totally shocked:’ Nanaimo residents trying to fill service gaps left by Deaf centre’s closure
NANAIMO — The closure of a vital not-for-profit resource centre has left the local Deaf community scrambling to fill the gaps.
The Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre Association (IDHHC) announced earlier this year their locations in Saanich and on Applecross Rd. in Nanaimo would be closed permanently as of June 30, after 35 years of service, citing a lack of financial support from the province and dwindling donations and grants.
Affected Nanaimo residents include married couple Sandi and Ron, who are both deaf and have benefited from the IDHHC services for years, along with working and volunteering for the organization.
Sandi, 68, told NanaimoNewsNOW they first learned about the centre’s closure through local news media.
