Top U16 and U18 Nanaimo Track and Field Club Athletes compete at national championship

“We’ve seen an increase in athletes going to Legions in the past couple of years as our high school athlete roster grows and the nationals are hosted in more Western provinces with Calgary in 2025, and in Regina this year and next.”

For many of the competitors Legions will mark the end of the season although Nanaimo will be hosting the 2026 BC Athletics Cross Country Championships at Arbutus Meadows on October 17.

Urbanwicz said throughout the club 2026 has been a banner year.

“Our high school athletes brought home a record number of medals from high school and club provincial meets. Eleven U16 athletes competed for Zone 6 at the BC Summer Games and brought home 16 medals. And our Junior Development athletes (9-13 yr olds) have also had an amazing season. Provincials were hosted in Duncan so we had a record number attend and they brought home 29 medals in total.”

Legion nationals is the premiere national event for U16 and U18 track and field and the Nanaimo club has been chosen to host for two consecutive years in 2028 and 2029.

“This will be an amazing opportunity for BC and Island athletes to experience a National Championship,” Urbanowicz said. “We will be working closely with the city, Tourism Nanaimo and the local Legion branches to put on an unforgettable championship event for the athletes and spectators. The facility is undergoing some renovations this summer to prepare for Legions and other future events.”
