Clippers strike good Fortune with veteran’s return

NANAIMO — The Clippers have started well in the new BCHL season with a 3-1 record in September.

But their roster will get even stronger in October with the return of forward Patrick Fortune.

The 2025-26 team assist leader was trying out in the Western Hockey League, however the door was always open for a return to Nanaimo.

Fortune is returning for a third year and reuniting with several coaches and teammates that he already knows.

“It is like coming home,” Fortune said. “Coming here, it’s been like I never left. Being back here is something I’m super excited about.”

In his BCHL career the 20-year old has always had a scoring touch and he feels like he can raise the bar again this season.

“I want to be more consistent this year and I want to score more. Normally I’ve been looking to find those older guys who can bury but now I’m an overager and this is my year. They’ll be expecting more goals out of me this season.”

As an experienced player Fortune will be expected to take on some of the leadership on the team as well.

“The leadership group here is already established but I know what it takes to be a good leader and I can show the young guys on and off the ice what it takes to be successful.”

Another one of the Clippers three year veterans, Elliot Perreault, said the addition of a veteran forward who knows the program will be extremely valuable.

“He’s so dynamic and creative on offense. When we need a strong shift or a goal the guys will really appreciate what he does for our team. He can do a lot of things not a lot of guys can do in this league. It’s really cool to have him back for his last year.”

Fortune will have to wait a little bit longer to make his season debut.

He only recently arrived in Nanaimo and is just getting over a minor injury.

The California product won’t accompany the team on their three game road Oct. 2 to Oct. 4 in the lower mainland but he is expected to suit up for the Clippers next home game on Friday, Oct. 9 against Cowichan Valley.

After going on a long playoff run with the team this past spring Fortune is hungry to end his junior career with a championship.

“Being at the rink you can see that from everybody. I’m feeling really confident in this group that we can be the best team in the league. Talking to the returners the guys are taking it seriously at practice, film meetings, in the trainers room, and that’s what it takes to be a championship level team.”
