Nanaimo toxic drug deaths jump as part of worrying 2026 trend

NANAIMO — Another ten individuals have lost their lives to drug toxicity in the Nanaimo area.

New data from the BC Coroners Service (BCCS) shows the 10 deaths in the Nanaimo region were part of 15 across all of central Vancouver Island, including communities such as Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Port Alberni, Tofino, and Ucluelet, for the month of April.

It brings the total number of lives lost to toxic street drugs in Nanaimo this year to 33, just over half the 60 similar deaths throughout the central Island.

Central Vancouver Island, which encompasses communities between the Malahat and Cumberland, has seen the most loss of life so far this year from toxic street drugs, with the south Island seeing 44 deaths and the north just 12 through the first four months of the year.

While the total number of deaths province-wide continues to drop, Nanaimo is pacing for a significant rise in fatalities over last year when 71 people were killed from a toxic street drug supply.

Recent alarming increases of toxic drug responses by paramedics province-wide, including the Nanaimo area, have been documented by NanaimoNewsNOW.

The province set two recent daily records for the number of overdose/drug poisoning events paramedics responded to, according to concerning data relayed from BC Emergency Health Services.

The most recent grim daily record of 326 documented overdoses across B.C. was registered on May 27, which included an exceedingly high 23 incidents in Nanaimo alone, straining ambulance and Nanaimo Fire Rescue resources.

A record number of toxic drug fatalities was set in 2023 in Nanaimo when 114 deaths were recorded by the BCCS.

Provincially, B.C. reported 119 fatalities in April from illicit street drugs, among 522 people through the end of April.

A drop in overall fatalities was noted by the coroner, in a statement on Thursday, June 12.

“Since 2021, the death rate among individuals 60 and older has remained relatively stable, while the death rate among those between 19 and 59 has declined significantly over the same period.”

So far this year, four in five deaths in the province have occurred inside private residences, social or supportive housing, single-room occupancies, or shelters.

Just 18 per cent occurred outside or in vehicles.

Working-age men continue to be overrepresented in the data, with 68 per cent of recorded fatalities linked to drug toxicity coming from those aged 30 to 59, with 76 per cent being men.

Flurofentanyl is a main driver behind the deaths, found in 67 per cent of test results, with cocaine (57 per cent), fentanyl (56 per cent) and methamphetamine (54 per cent) also major contributors.

Numerous overdose/drug poisoning event advisories in Nanaimo and other Vancouver Island communities have been issued this year by Island Health.
