9.2% increase from city taxpayers

Funding fight continues between City & ACRD

The funding fight between the city and regional district surfaced again yesterday at a meeting of city council.
Alberni-Clayoquot representatives were on hand to present their proposed budget, which includes a 9.2% increase to the city.
Mayor Sharie Minions says the city is looking to streamline some shared services in hopes of reducing financial commitments.
“What is going up is the overall ACRD costs,” she said. “There are many costs that are duplicated between the city and ACRD. We pay 100% of those costs at the city and then we contribute additionally to the ACRD. I personally believe really strongly that we want to contribute to good services that are important, but of course the costs have to be reasonable and we need to make sure we’re getting value.”
Minions said the city will look to reduce its $60,000 to the regional parks budget by either merging parks services or withdrawing from regional parks altogether.
The city contributed $2.72 million to the ACRD last year, and the proposed municipal increase to $2.93 million is double the average percentage increase requested from the rural areas.
