Residents say grizzly encounters up in Bella Coola, scene of attack on students
UPDATE: The BC Conservation Officer service reported Monday, Nov. 24 they had captured one grizzly bear, but evidence to suggest it was the one responsible for last week’s attack was inconclusive.
The animal was tagged with a GPS tracker and released for further monitoring, while searches continue for at least two other animals.
EARLIER — Residents of Bella Coola on British Columbia’s central coast say they’ve been grappling with a spike in encounters with grizzly bears in the remote community where a bear attacked a group of students and teachers last week.
Resident Corey Van Andel has been living in the valley for four years, and says he noticed a number of house break-ins by bears that wouldn’t have happened in previous years.
