Regional District of Nanaimo board under new leadership

NANAIMO — The Regional District of Nanaimo’s board has elected a new chair and vice-chair.

Area H (Bowser, Qualicum Bay, Deep Bay) director Stuart McLean was elected, by acclamation, the new chair of the Board of Directors on Tuesday, Nov. 4, replacing Vanessa Craig who had served in the role for the past three years.

McLean will be in the position for at least a year, with his current term to end with the 2026 municipal election next October.

“Thank you to the Board for putting your trust into me,” McLean told directors after the announcement. “I’ll do my very best to represent you and the region over the next year and I look forward to working with you all constructively to further our collective priorities over the last year of our term.”

McLean’s first order of business was to preside over election of his vice-chair, with Area C (Extension, Nanaimo Lakes, East Wellington) director Lauren Melanson winning a vote against Lantzville Mayor Mark Swain.

Melanson told directors during a brief speech before the vote she was wholely committed to the Regional District Board, not having other professional commitments diverting her energy.

She replaces McLean who’d served as vice-chair under Craig in the previous two terms.

Election of a new chair and vice-chair is required by provincial legislation during the first meeting of November.
