NANAIMO — 15-year-old Brooklyn Chase is a champion discus thrower, hockey player and lacrosse player who also plays golf for fun.

The NDSS student said hockey is her first love but she recently won a gold medal in discus at the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in August.

Chase threw 35.63 metres to win the U16 event, which was also a personal best.

“It was cool and Calgary was really fun. It was fun to look at the city. It was also really competitive and more strict and professional than most of the other meets I’ve been to.”

Hockey season has now begun for Chase with a spot on the U18 Impact in the VIAHA.

“I’ve done hockey my whole life and I’m still deciding between track and field which one I want to focus more on. I’ll probably decide that in the next couple of years and I’m leaning towards hockey.”

Last season Chase and her teammates enjoyed success at a major U15 tournament.

“There was the KIBIHT tournament in Kamloops and we won it and I got some awards. We also won third at provincials and got medals at a few different tournaments.”

Chase said her family wants to make sure she prioritizes academics ahead of any of her pursuits in athletics.

“My mom and dad always say put schoolwork first. If I’ve got homework and hockey, maybe don’t go to hockey that night but thankfully I’ve never had to do that. Lacrosse doesn’t start until March and so right now I’m focusing on hockey and weightlifting for track and I haven’t had too much homework yet.”

While there may come a time when Chase has to focus on just one sport she has plans to stay busy with hockey, lacrosse and discus throwing again this year all while getting in the occasional golf round for fun.

“When I get to Grade 12 I’ll have to cut back. This will likely be my second and last year of lacrosse. I’d like to get a hockey scholarship somewhere but for now I’m just going to keep playing. There’s also the PWHL but I’m only 15 so that’s a long way away still.”
