Mounties asking for help after Nanaimo man assaulted twice in two days

NANAIMO — Police are looking for leads after a man reported being attacked twice in consecutive days while waiting for his bus.

Both assaults happened at the bus loop on Front St., next to Port Place Shopping Centre, with the first occurring in the early evening hours of Friday, Oct. 3, then the next happening at approximately 8:30 p.m. the following day.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said the victim was a 19-year-old man with developmental challenges.

“On both occasions, he said he was waiting for his bus, which he rides quite frequently throughout the day. Two individuals approached him and proceeded to assault him [on Friday], and the second incident he was chased then assaulted again.”

Two attackers were involved both times and left the man with bumps and bruises.

O’Brien said the incidents have been traumatic for the individual.

Police are not ruling out a connection between the victim and the attackers, or if it was the same attackers on both nights.

O’Brien said they want to speak with anyone who might have witnessed something.

“We know that that area is highly frequented. There’s a lot of people waiting for busses, a lot of vehicles going by, so we’re hoping somebody can help out. They saw or heard something, somebody said something, either a dash cam video or somebody waiting by.”

One of the suspects during Saturday’s assault was wearing a grey hoodie and brown shoes, while the other was in a black hoodie.

The pair were seen running towards downtown Nanaimo.
