TOKYO, JAPAN — Nanaimo’s Ethan Katzberg is going to need a bigger trophy cabinet.

The reigning Olympic and World Champion in the men’s hammer throw event added another accolade to his glittering career on Tuesday, Sept. 16, winning his second consecutive World Athletics Championship title.

Katzberg, 23, threw a distance of 84.70 metres to win gold at Tokyo’s National Stadium, breaking a pair of records in the process including his own Canadian record (84.38 metres) and the championship record (83.63 metres).

It was the fifth farthest throw ever in the history of men’s hammer throw, and is two metres shy of the 1986 world record set by then-Soviet Yuriy Sedykh.

On Tuesday, Katzberg was the only competitor to throw over 83 metres.

Germany’s Merlin Hummel took silver at 82.77 metres and Bence Halasz of Poland earned bronze at 82.69 metres.

The win continues an absolutely dominant run for Katzberg in the event, who appears to be in a league of his own.

Katzberg won gold in Paris at the 2024 Olympic Games where his effort of 84.12 metres was over four metres further than second place.

His 2023 world championship win came at a distance of 81.25 metres, while he’s also won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Richmond’s Camryn Rogers won the women’s event on Monday, following up her win in Paris, and making Canada the first nation to win successive Olympic and World Championship events in both the men’s and women’s events.
