Qualicum Beach provides $400,000 for new medical equipment

QUALICUM BEACH — The Town is providing a big financial boost to help buy medical equipment for a local medical centre.

Town Council, in partnership with the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation (NDHF), recently authorized the use of $400,000 for medical equipment for the new Primrose Medical Centre, to be located at 661 Primrose St.

In a release, the Town said the money “will help establish a fully equipped medical centre, supporting efforts to recruit and retain family physicians and improve access to primary care in the community.”

The funds are from Community Amenity Contributions received through the rezoning and development of the Shelter Ridge subdivision at 850 Eagecrest Dr., and 2075 Island Hwy. W., with health care initiatives identified as the intended use of these contributions, resulting in no tax increases.

The NDHF will purchase the equipment through a partnering agreement with the Town.

The Town said the incoming Medical Director for the Primrose Medical Centre, Dr. Kelly Hadfield, who also works with the Qualicum Beach Medical Clinic and the Qualicum First Nation Medical Walk-in Clinic, has played a big part in operational planning for the new health centre.

“We immensely appreciate the Town of Qualicum Beach contributing funds to be administered by NDHF, for medical equipment necessary for the operation of the Primrose Medical Centre,” Dr. Hafield said. “This new model for health care in Qualicum Beach will bring family doctors and specialist care closer to home. This $400,000 contribution from the Town allows for the opening of this permanent community health care asset; an investment for the whole community.”

New patients will be assigned to Primrose through the BC Health Connect Registry as more family doctors join.

According to the Mid-Island Health Alliance, a local non-profit advocating for primary care health services, said Primrose Medical Centre is expected to open this fall.
