Hewer said in the range of 50 to 100 kids participate in the bike parade to Huddlestone Park, with adults taking part in the spectacle in recent years, which includes people dressing up in costumes.

All forms of non-motorized devices are welcome in the bike parade, including scooters and strollers.

Hewer said their family-friendly event appeals to people of all ages.

“It’s bouncy castles, food trucks, we have local vendors, food trucks, we have two groups doing face painting and of course the petting farm.”

The popular petting farm has been expanded for this year’s edition of Minetown Day, Hewer said.

A new offering this year is a ticketed evening event for adults at Costin Hall on Saturday between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

“It really has turned into a full day event this year. We’re starting witch a pancake breakfast at 8 am and we’re going late into the night ending at 11 p.m. with a dance that’s being hosted by Lantzville Recreation Association.”

Providing low-barrier, high entertainment value is a hallmark of Minetown Day, Hewer said.

“We do try to keep it very low cost, there’s some great free entertainment and low cost food options,” Hewer told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Chase River Heritage Days

While Lantzville has a longstanding community tradition, a new event celebrating local pride also takes place this weekend just south of Nanaimo.

The second annual Chase River Heritage Days takes place the evening of Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday with a trio of gatherings staged by the Chase River Community Association.

Mike Parker, association chair, said staging this kind of event has been envisioned for a long time.

He sees a lot of value in bringing together their vast community of the Cinnabar Valley and Chase River areas.

“Now that it’s and running we hope to make this an annual event, that’s the plan. We’re encouraging lots of residents to come out and participate, meet others in our community and lets all work together to make it a better place.”
