Phase two of Parksville waterfront walkway replacement getting underway

PARKSVILLE — The second phase of Parksville’s waterfront walkway replacement will start on Monday, Sept. 15.

Replacing the half-kilometre aging boardwalk at the Parksville Community Park began in September and is expected to take about three years before being completed, the City said in a release.

The work starting on Monday is for the section from the Community Park to in front of Park Sands Beach Resort, and is expected to take about one month to complete.

This section of the walkway will be closed to the public during construction, with signage, fencing, and barricades in place.

The remaining sections of the walkway can be accessed via the beach.

The first phase of the waterfront walkway replacement, completed in the fall, included around 4,000 square feet next to the waterfront gazebo and sand pit, along with replacing two long curbed benches.

The entire walkway will be replaced in the coming years before the project is fully complete.

The City of Parksville also said they’re removing three pieces of equipment in their outdoor gym in the Community Park, as they’ve reached the end of their service life.

The leg press machine, recumbent bike and elliptical trainer are no longer considered usable following years of minor repairs.

Minor maintenance work on the remaining equipment will be done to extend its functional life as the City reviews options for the future of the outdoor green gym.
