Public tip leads to arrest of alleged Nanaimo dog abuser

NANAIMO — A man accused of beating a leashed German Shepherd late last month has been arrested, following a public tip.

Nanaimo RCMP reported a 36-year-old man was taken into police custody on the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 7 in the 100 block of Milton St., about two blocks from the Nanaimo RCMP detachment.

“The dog was seized pending an investigation into animal cruelty and is receiving the appropriate care,” the release stated.

A phone call to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment led to the man’s arrest, police reported.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Sherri Wade informed NanaimoNewsNOW charges against the suspect are pending.

A man was reported to be seen punching and kicking the dog on the evening of July 27 on Selby St.

The witness submitted pictures of the suspect and the dog and filed a report with Nanaimo RCMP.

Police received over 20 calls from the public with information about the man and dog after issuing a news release on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
