NANAIMO — Mounties are investigating after a 25-year-old Nanaimo man was hit and killed by a vehicle this week, after reportedly being seen lying on the roadway.

On Tuesday, July 29, around 10:20 p.m., emergency services responded to St. George St. just east of the Canco service station.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien with the Nanaimo RCMP said it was confirmed by a witness the victim was seen on the road when they were struck by an eastbound vehicle.

“An individual appeared to be lying on the road. A car came by, and not seeing that person, struck the individual.”

The victim was pronounced dead on scene, while the driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.

Drugs and alcohol were ruled out as contributing factors on their behalf.

“We haven’t got an eyewitness that actually saw the collision, but we have witnesses who heard a collision,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The roadway was closed for several hours to investigate, with the BC Coroners Service attended the scene.

While police have ruled out criminality, the investigation continues.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency number at 1-250-754-2345.
