“It’s a big step for them as well, because last year they were in Division two, so they’ve taken a huge step up, and they’ve really held their own. Playing against the number one team this past weekend, 60 or 70 minutes into the game, it was only 15-5, so we gave the number one team there quite a run for their money, and it just goes to show that the coaches have worked really hard with the team throughout the year and done a fantastic job in getting them where they need to be right now.”

In 2025 the women played at the Division 2 level so Marshall is excited for how they’ve handled a difficult transitiion.

“Although the results haven’t necessarily gone our way as much, I think just moving up to Division one was probably the right way of going anyway, just to develop and create further depth.”

Marshall said the Hornets are focused on increased their depth by offering a junior and a minis program.

Both have been very well received.

“We’re trying to get in there and trying to still boost our minis programs so that when they are starting to flow into the high schools and stuff, they’ve already got a core set of abilities. They are taught to start tackling correctly, so that we can…build a little bit more confidence in not only the players but also the parents that are out there actually seeing how that program is developing.”

Plans are in the works to get some more rugby field space in the south end of Nanaimo.

Currently all their programs share the same field at Pioneer Park.

Marshall said adding south end options for practices and games will be a game changer for the sport in Nanaimo.
