Mobile home destroyed in early morning fire in south Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A mobile home was completely destroyed by a fire which broke out early Thursday morning.

Smokes and flames were seen coming from a modular home at 25 Maki Rd. around 7 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, with the structure destroyed in a matter of minutes as flames spread quickly.

Assistant fire chief David Dales said one person lived at the property and they are currently being taken care of by emergency support services

“With the proximity of our Fire Station #4, it took us only about a minute and a half to get there. It was a mobile home, fully engulfed, the resident had left the building…it was just a real quick fire attack to knock the fire down and keep it from spreading.”

A neighbouring home sustained minor exterior damage as a result of heat from the fire.

Dales said they were able to limit spread to nearby Cedar trees.

“The fire moved quickly in the mobile home, so we changed our strategy to more of a defensive posture while protecting those other structures that were close and the trees.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dales said it appears the resident was not insured.

“These are one of these instances where working smoke alarms and evacuating to your pre-arranged meeting place does work because structures do go up fast and we need people to have working smoke alarms and leave when notified that there is smoke in the area.”
